The new Digitisation of the Energy Turnaround Act (Gesetz zur Digitalisierung der Energiewende) has been published in today’s Federal Law Gazette. It will therefore enter into force tomorrow, 2 September 2016.

The Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) has published the details of a new support programme called “Showcase Smart Energy – Digital Agenda for the Energy Transition (SINTEG)”. The programme provides support for R&D projects that develop and demonstrate large-scale solutions for a reliable and efficient energy supply in model regions with a high degree of intermittent renewable energy.

After the reform of the Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG) in 2014, reforms and regulations regarding the energy market design, combined heat and power, the incentive regulation, grid expansion, renewable energy, CO2 savings in power plants and energy efficiency, had to be tackled, the Federal Association of the Energy and Water Industry (BDEW) demanded at the beginning of the new year. In a BDEW survey 39% of those surveyed saw their economic conditions worsening over the last two years. Utilities with conventional power capacity were hardest hit.
Municipal utilities prepare for major changes of their business within the next four years. At the same time the readiness to cooperate has increased significantly. These are the main findings of a study on municipal utilities carried out by Ernst & Young (EY) in cooperation with the Federal Association of the Energy and Water Industry (BDEW). The study polled CEOs and managing directors of municipal utilities of different size and and set-up.
Today we continue our series on the competing parties’ agendas for the upcoming federal elections focusing on the parties positions on the extension of grids and energy storage, the implementation of smart grids and of demand-side-management. These issues generally relate to system operators’ obligations and therefore are subject to the regulatory framework governing transmission and distribution system operators.
On 2 May 2013, the Commission published a Communication on “Energy Technologies and Innovation”, setting out a strategy to enable the EU to have a world-class technology and innovation sector fit for coping with the challenges up to 2020 and beyond. The Federal Association of the Energy and Water Industry (BDEW) welcomed the communication, saying new, innovative products and business models as well as technical innovations were needed for a successful implementation of the energy policy shift in Germany

A new study by the Association for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies (VDE) calls for a smart supply concept in order to better integrate electricity producers, consumers and grid operators, achieve synergies and reduce electricity costs.
The Federal Association of the Energy and Water Industry (BDEW) has presented a roadmap until 2022 for transforming the existing German grids and turning them into smart grids. BDEW identified three phases and proposed ten concrete steps that relate to the different phases.
