Due to the windy weather one wind power record is following another, the Renewable Energy Industry Institute Münster (IWR) informed. The wind power record set in December 2014 has already been broken on Friday 9 January 2015 when wind power plants with a capacity of almost 31,300 MW were generating electricity for some time in the afternoon, IWR said based on preliminary data for wind power capacity (mean hourly data) by the power exchange EEX.
The strong winter winds already lead to a wind power record on 12 December 2014, when wind power plants with a capacity of 29,500 MW fed into the grids. This record has been broken on Friday by almost 2,000 MW. In view of total wind power capacity of about 38,000 MW (including roughly 900 MW offshore capacity) the new 31,300 MW record means that almost 80% of the German wind power capacity were operating, IWR said, pointed out that the weather forecasts are predicting more windy weather until the end of the week.
With more wind power growth in Germany, not least in the offshore sector, the Friday record was the first, but will surely not be the last one in 2015. According to Offshore-Windenergie.net another 520 wind turbines with a capacity of about 2,400 MW are currently under construction. On 29 December 2014 RWE Innogy informed that all 48 6MW wind turbines of its Nordsee Ost wind farm off the island of Helgoland had been successfully installed over Christmas and the first turbine had commenced trial operation.
