Construction of Wind Turbines for 400 MW and 288 MW Offshore Wind Farms Global Tech I and DanTysk Completed

Construction of the 80 5 MW AREVA turbines and the 80 3.6 MW Siemens turbines at the North Sea wind farms Global Tech I and DanTysk are reported to have been completed.

1. Global Tech I

Global Tech I is situated 93 km northwest off the island of Juist in the North Sea. It covers and area of 43 square kilometres. The 80 5 MW Areva Wind M5000 turbines have a total capacity of 400 MW. The technical design of the transformer substation, which has also been completed, and the internal cabling is configured with redundancy, so that a reliable supply of electrical energy for the equivalent of 445,000 households can be guaranteed, Global Tech I Offshore Wind GmbH says.

At present, the cable work needs to be finalised. Tests of the farm’s 120 kilometres of internal cables are underway. Transmission grid operator Tennet intends to connect Global Tech I in early September to BorWin beta, Tennet’s offshore converter station, and wants to commence test operations of the grid connection and the interplay of the overall system during the fourth quarter this year, Global Tech 1 says. Regular grid connection is expected to be available in early 2015.

Main partners in Global Tech I Offshore Wind GmbH that developed, erects and will operate the wind farm are the municipal and regional utilities Stadtwerke München GmbH and HEAG Südhessische Energie AG, Darmstadt, with shares of 24.9% each and Axpo International S. A. with a share of 24.1%.

2. DanTysk

DanTysk is a joint venture of Vattenfall (51%) and the municipal utility Stadtwerke München (49%). The offshore wind farm is located 70 km west of the island of Sylt in the North Sea. It covers an area of 70 square kilometers. With 80 3.6 MW turbines supplied by Siemens (SWT-3.6-120), the wind farm has an installed capacity of 288 megawatts (MW), enough to supply up to 400,000 households, according to DanTysk.

Vattenfall began erecting the first wind turbine in mid-April this year. The installation of the 80 turbines could be completed in about four month, not least because of the good weather conditions on the North Sea, DanTysk points out. As the offshore substation for DanTysk has also been built, the operating test for the submarine transmission cable Sylwin1 [1] operated by the transmission system operator Tennet will start in October/November, DanTysk says. The company expects tests to be finished by the beginning of March 2015.

3. Legal and Factual Background Information

According to the amended Renewable Energy Sources Act that entered into force on 1 August 2014 [2] (EEG 2014), Germany strives to have an offshore capacity of 6.5 MW by 2020 and 15 MW by 2030 (a reduction of the former goals of 10 MW by 2020 and 25 MW by 2030).

By decision of 13 August 2014 [3], the Federal Network Agency (BNetzA) determined its new procedures for future allocations and transfers of offshore grid connection capacity under the EEG 2014, which shall ensure that the above goals are met.

According to www.offshore-windenergie.net [4] so far 146 wind turbines with a total capacity of 628.3 MW are in operation in Germany, the majority of it (124 turbines with 577.5 MW) in the North Sea.
