In a research project for system services called INEES Volkswagen AG (VW) teamed up with green electricity provider Lichtblick, PV inverter manufacturer SMA Solar Technology AG and Fraunhofer Institute for Wind Energy and Energy System Technology (IWES). 20 VW e-up electric cars delivered to test customers shall not only be powered by electricity, but feed back electricity into the grid due to intelligent charging technology and software. That way they shall form a demand-oriented storage battery of a significant size that is able to balance the fluctuating input of wind and solar power and stablize the grid.
With an app designed by VW drivers can decide what share of the battery shall be made available to the electricity market. In return drivers receive a payment. The technology developed by VW ensures that the high-voltage batteries always provide at least the amount of energy specified by users, the company points out.
The IT platform “SwarmConductor” („SchwarmDirigent“) designed by Lichtblick is the main interface between the grid and the car fleet, which aggregates the batteries of the electric cars to form one large virtual battery that is integrated in the electricity market. The software allows to pool and sell the electricity as operating reserve (so-called secondary control power) to help balance the grid.
Project partner SMA Solar Technology AG developed a bi-directional charging station for home use, the so-called Sunny Wallbox. Via a CCS interface with 10 kW it connects test participants with the grid.
Fraunhofer IWES is participating in the project by conducting measurements and running simulations.
The project is sponsored by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMUB) and was declared a flagship project („Leuchtturm der Elektromobilität“) by the government.
