E.ON Announces Earlier Closure of Grafenrheinfeld Nuclear Power Plant

E.ON today communicated its intention to shut down the Grafenrheinfeld nuclear power plan in May 2015.  This would be 7 months before the closure will be due under the German nuclear power exit decision.

The respective closure notice has reportedly been filed both with the Federal Network Agency and with TenneT, transmission system operator for the plant. Operation will only make commercial sense if a sufficiently long operating time without fuel rod tax follows. The fuel rod tax will expire in 2016.

Due to the shortened remaining operating time for Grafenrheinfeld, an early shut down is inevitable in the interest of the company’s shareholders, E.ON said.

    My understanding is that a fuel reload would be needed at the start of 2015, and that this reload would worthwhile only if the plant can run until the fuel is fully used. As it must close at end of 2015, it’s not worth it. Also closing this plant, mechanically rises electricity prices a bit which helps the company being profitable.

    This plant however is quite in the south of Germany, between Frankfort and Nuremberg. Closing it will not make it easy to balance the grid.
