Preliminary Figures Show Increase of Gas Consumption and Slight Decline of Electricity Consumption in 2013

While gas consumption in 2013 rose by close to 7% according to preliminary figures published by the Federal Association of the Energy and Water Industry (BDEW), electricity consumption in Germany declined slightly.

Gas consumption rose from 909 billion in 2012 to 970 billion kWh in 2013. BDEW cites the cold weather in the first half of the year as the main reason. Consequently the mild weather in the second half of the year and the continuously declining share of gas in the generation mix (for more information, please see the second blog post below) dampened this effect. There was little economic stimulus for gas consumption, BDEW says.

Electricity consumption declined by 1.8% from 607 billion kWh in 2012 to 596 billion kWh in 2013. BDEW names weaker demand by the industry sector, in particular by energy-intensive companies, increased energy efficiency and the fact that 2013 was not a leap year, as reasons.

    I have a question for Germany statistics, why is gas consumption termed by kWh not cubic meter? thanks

    To have a common unit for comparative purposes, taking into account calorific value of the gas in question.
