18 April 2013, 12:00 pm: German Actual Wind and Solar Power Generation 35.6 GW

Actual power generation from renewables is reaching new records. On Thursday, 18 April 2013 at noon, combined actual generation from solar and wind in Germany reached 35,609 MW. At the same time, actual production of generating units of ≥ 100 MW was only 33,150.4 MW.

The figures are based on data from the EEX transparency website [1]. Solar contributed 18,944.9 MW, with wind not being far behind at 16,664.1 MW.

According to Norbert Allnoch, director of the Institute of the Renewable-Energy-Industry IWR, it was the first time that wind and solar provided more than 50% on a high consumption day during the working week.

While 35 GW or more than 50% at noon on a weekday may sound like a lot, to get to the EEG’s electricity targets of 35% renewables by 2020, 50% by 2030, 65% in 204 and 80% by 2050, there is quite a way to go.

It remains to be seen how the increasing amount of renewable energy generation will affect the EEG surcharge for 2014. Some reports [2]suggest that it may again considerably increase from currently 5.277 ct/kWh, with 7 ct/kWh 2014 being at the high end of figures currently being floated.
