The study “Nature Awareness 2011” carried out on behalf of the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (Bundesamt für Naturschutz – BfN) shows broad support for Germany’s energy policy shift towards a renewable energy supply. The study also reveals a clear preference for offshore followed by onshore wind power, BfN reported.
85% respectively 94% of the German population supported the energy policy shift after the nuclear disaster in Fukushima in March 2011, BfN says, referring to a survey from 2010 respectively a survey made in 2011 after the Fukushima incident.
The Nature Awareness 2011 survey, carried out among 2,000 participants from all social classes, shows a clear preference for offshore wind power (87%) among the renewable energy forms, followed by onshore wind power (79%) and photovoltaics outside residential areas (77%). With 42% enthusiasm new power lines did not find as much support.
The high level of support for offshore wind with concurrent limited support for new power lines is noteworthy. Offshore wind power receives some of the highest feed-in tariffs under the Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG), for which ultimately the consumer pays. Besides, new power lines are needed to link the offshore wind farms to the places of demand. Yet, grid expansion does not only face problems due to a lack of acceptance by the population, also financing offshore grid connections is challenging. A draft for a new liability regime for offshore wind power addressing offshore grid issues shall be debated in the Federal Cabinet today.
