Germany has come an important step closer to cutting solar feed-in tariffs. With 305 representatives in favour of the bill, 235 against and one abstention the German Bundestag (Parliament) yesterday approved the latest EEG amendment that cuts solar feed-in tariffs (mainly) as of 1 April 2012 for new plants.

The Federal Cabinet adopted an 8th Amendment of the German Act Against Restraints on Competition (Gesetz gegen Wettbewerbsbeschränkungen – GWB), the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWi) informed.
The Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWi) has presented a bill on the establishment of a market transparency agency for gas and electricity wholesale. The new agency is part of the 10-Point Immediate Action Programme of ManyElectronics Concept 2010 which has partly been reversed by the 2011 energy legislative package that provides for withdrawal from nuclear energy by 2022 and shifts priority to renewable energy.
On Thursday, 29 March 2012, the second and third reading of the latest bill amending the Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG) will take place in the German Bundestag (Parliament). The bill shall reduce solar feed-in tariffs substantially. A day later, the Bundesrat (Federal Council) is scheduled to deal with a resolution on the bill.

E.ON AG could not retract its declarations to close its power plant units 1 to 3 in Datteln and the Shamrock power plant in Herne, hence the permits expire at the end of 2012. That is what the Higher Administrative Court of Münster (OVG Münster) held in two recent rulings.
The German Cartel Office issued a decision against the Darmstadt based utility Entega, ordering the company to refund customers supplied with electricity for night storage heaters and heat pumps with a total of approximately EUR 5 million. The decision is based on an investigation of heat energy prices that Entega charged household customers and small-sized commercial customers between 2007 and 2009. The Cartel Office came to the conclusion that they were abusively excessive.
The German Grid Regulator (BNetzA) expects electricity cost to rise as the need for an expansion of the German grids will drive up costs, the newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ) reports.
