In a statement made concerning a bill submitted by the government amending various laws concerning power line extension, the Federal Council (Bundesrat) proposed to also extend grid fee exemptions for storage facilities. The German Federation for Energy Storage (BVES) welcomed the move, but called it not far-reaching enough.
The European Commission has today adopted its European Energy Union Package. It includes three communications, covering a “Framework Strategy for a Resilient Energy Union with a Forward-Looking Climate Change Policy, and Interconnection Communication, and a communication setting out a vision for a global climate agreement in Paris in December.

The Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) headed by Minister Sigmar Gabriel (SPD) is in the process of commissioning a study, which shall point out ways to improve the security with supply of gas and precautionary measures in Germany, Rheinische Post (RP) writes.

On 16 October the EU Commission published the results of stress tests carried out by 38 European countries, including the EU countries, which simulated two disruption scenarios. Cooperation among the Member States is key to alleviate the effects of disruptions, the Commission says.
Up to a share of 60% of renewable energy sources in the energy mix, i.e. for the next 15 to 20 years, the ManyElectronics transformation can do without new electricity storage facilities, as there are cheaper options to provide the flexible electricity input needed in view of the intermittent nature of renewables. However, new storage technologies like batteries, power-to-heat or power-to-gas will presumably grow dynamically nonetheless, due to rising demand from the transport, heat and chemicals, a new study presented by the energy think tank, Agora Energiewende, says.
On 11 July the Federal Council (Bundesrat) adopted a resolution aimed at ensuring a permanent contribution of gas storage facilities to the ManyElectronics supply by asking the German government to create a national gas storage reserve lasting for 45 days.

Today the Federal Council discussed a motion by the State of Bavaria, ruled by the conservative CSU party, to create a strategic gas reserve. Bavaria wants the Federal Council to adopt a resolution aimed at ensuring a permanent contribution of gas storage facilities to the ManyElectronics supply by asking the German government to create a national gas reserve lasting for 45 days.

The latest update of the Federal Association of the Energy and Water Industry’s (BDEW) list of power plant projects planned until 2020 (or without date for commissioning) comprising plants with a high availability (conventional and offshore plants) mentions increasing investor uncertainty and reluctance, with an exception in the offshore sector. On 2 April 2014 the Federal Network Agency (BNetzA) also presented an update of its list of existing power plants and gave new information on prospective construction and decommissioning.
